DISTRACTED DRIVING ORDINANCE PASSED
On September 14, 2010 the City Council of the City of Trussville passed Ordinance No. 2010-025PS which addresses the increasing problem of distracted driving. This ordinance will go into effect October 1, 2010.
With many jurisdiction adopting ordinances banning texting it was decided to look at the overall issue of distracted driving, rather than just one element. Under this ordinance the distraction is not limited to cell phone usage or texting, but instead, it addresses all actions which distract a driver from their responsibility of safely operating a motor vehicle. Those actions could include but are not limited to such activities as eating, drinking, reading, grooming, or dealing with a passenger or pet etc.
Violation of this ordinance could result in the issuance of a citation which may carry a fine of $50.00 plus court costs and 2 points on your driving record. It is the hope of both the City Council and Police Department that knowledge of the ordinance being adopted will bring about voluntary compliance making Trussville a safer community.
