An Overview of Recent Changes to the Domestic Violence Crime Statutes

In this training, Jennifer Arsenian, the Legal/Policy Director for the Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence, will highlight the changes to the domestic violence crime statutes, including the addition of criminal offenses not included in the Domestic Violence Crime Statutes previously; the degree of crime elevated for many of the new offenses added in the Act; the elevation of Domestic Violence in the 3rd Degree to a felony upon the third conviction; and the crime of strangulation/suffocation created with a new relationship definition.
 
Lt. Orlando Gonzalez from Montgomery Police Department will present information on Effective Law Enforcement Response to Immigrant Victims of Domestic Violence
 
Beth Cardwell, Domestic Violence Liaison-Family Court, will answer questions related to PFAs (Protection From Abuse).
 
Jennifer Caraway, Director of Domestic Violence Services at the YWCA-Central Alabama, will provide information about local resources and free services available for victims of domestic violence.
