Location:  Trussville Civic Center  5381 Trussville-Clay Road Trussville AL

Course Description: Abuse of controlled prescription drugs is a major problem in the United States. American abuse of controlled prescription drugs exceeds the number of those abusing cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, and inhalants combined. The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications are the most commonly abused drugs by high school students, second only to marijuana.
This training course is designed to prepare law enforcement officers to recognize specialized problems and contemporary issues associated with the diversion of pharmaceutical controlled substances. Topics to be covered include: Scope of Prescription Drug Abuse in America, Pharmaceutical Drug Trends, Synthetic Drugs of Abuse, Pain Management Clinics, Internet Pharmaceutical Diversion, DEA Diversion Program, DEA Tactical Diversion Squad Mission, Medical Expert Review of Patient Files for Successful Prosecution, and Personal Testimonies of Pharmaceutical Abuse Impact, Treatment, and Recovery.
The objective of this course is to enable law enforcement personnel to recognize and identify the current methods of diversion and to determine and implement the investigative process that can be used for overall prosecutorial success. Instructors for this course will be Executive Staff from the DEA Headquarters Office of Diversion Control, Supervisory Special Agents and Diversion Investigators from the DEA New Orleans and Dallas Field Divisions, a practicing physician who has testified as a federal expert witness in DEA diversion cases, and substance abuse counselors.
